Mass Effect is without a doubt one of the best gaming franchises in recent years. There are, of course, critics and skeptics who will disagree with this statement, but they will always and cannot get away from them. Moreover, the game is not remembered at all for its unique gameplay or stunning graphics – the series has never been strong in these categories. The plot, the excellent partners of Commander Sheppard and the excellent study of the game world take the first places in Mass Effect. The game always had something to do in addition to passing the main storyline and sometimes the side quests turned out to be almost more interesting than the main task. The partners were so alive and real that the loss of one of them was perceived as a personal tragedy. They were really missed and, having met them in the next part of the game, they were happy as if they were family. It was the interaction with them, their stories that turned Mass Effect from a third-person shooter with RPG elements into a real RPG with a capital letter. The Reapers attacked Earth on March 7, and Commander Sheppard, who is under house arrest for collaborating with Cerberus, was once again brought before the Alliance council. Who else can save the world if not the disgraced hero of the galaxy? But this time, not everything is so simple – the cycle of 50,000 years, released by technologically advanced organic civilizations, has come to an end, and the reapers have come to destroy them. Every single one. So the stagnant Normandy leaves the docks and the mission begins to save all living things. Only Sheppard can bring a fleet to Earth, which has not yet been equal, only with his help can the Horn be built, a super-weapon capable, according to legends, to destroy the Reapers once and for all. Only a gallant commander is able to organize a worthy defense of the Citadel and resolve conflicts of warring races.
Here, however, we are faced with the first of the minuses of the final part of the trilogy – the impenetrable stupidity of most of the population of the known part of the universe. Even in the face of imminent annihilation, all of these species are unable to postpone their differences even for a while and repel the enemy. Sheppard has to rush from planet to planet and deal with sometimes impossibly small conflicts, while the reapers confidently seize system after system and devastate one planet after another. And we are talking not only about fetch quests (and find, dear commander, the remains of a dinosaur so that we can clone it and give it to the krogan as mounts) but also about the main storyline. For example, the turians will not join the united galactic fleet and will not fly to save Earth until they protect their homeworld, for which they need krogan, and they will not help until the genophage is healed. Yes, you will all be composted tomorrow, if you don’t join forces! But no, the apocalypse will wait.
Such moments do not occur very often, but still more often than we would like. For the rest, however, there are practically no complaints about the plot.
Mass Effect 3 supports the import of saves, and the consequences of each of your actions in the past are most directly reflected in the current state of affairs. The game contains literally all the main characters that you met during the previous two parts, and a lot of minor ones. You will constantly bump into familiar faces, receive emails or eavesdrop on conversations from which the fate of a particular character becomes clear. BioWare has done a truly titanic job here.
In the spirit of the previous parts, Sheppard now and then faces a very difficult moral dilemma, and the choice is even more difficult this time. The life of your beloved partners now directly depends not only on your actions, but even on a random phrase that you dropped a few hours ago. And when you find out what it has led to, it is too late to change anything. In general, the atmosphere in the game is very, very sad, the heroes are constantly faced with betrayal, desertion, loved ones and just good acquaintances die. Someone withdraws into themselves, others are looking for discharge at the bottom of the bottle. No matter how hard you try, saving everyone is impossible. The memorial plaque installed on board the Normandy SR2 will be replenished with new names. The rare moments of enlightenment here are more like the calm before the storm.
In the second part, the developers simplified the side missions by removing the rides on Mako and giving us in return a radar with a reconnaissance module for automatically collecting resources from the surface of planets. He migrated to the third part and is used when performing fetch missions. Walking around the Citadel, you are either directly asked to get something important, or you get the task automatically, simply by overhearing the desired conversation. Finding the desired item is not too difficult, even considering the fact that the frequent use of the scanner in one star system necessarily attracts the attention of the reapers, making subsequent visits to this sector more than problematic. But finding who exactly on the Citadel needs to report the find is not an easy task, and Sheppard can often be found rushing around the capital of the Alliance in search of some volus or turian, whom he had never seen before – on the map, these the characters are not marked in any way, and in the quest their location is indicated rather vaguely.
